OMGC families gathered after school on Friday for our annual Blessing of the Animals, marking the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Students brought dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and photos of pets to receive a special blessing and a sprinkle of holy water. Those who could not bring a pet shared pictures on paper or phones and lifted their companions in prayer.
We held a quick blessing that thanked God for the beauty of creation and the joy animals bring to our homes. We prayed for gentle hearts, responsible care of all living things, and comfort for families who are grieving the loss of a beloved pet. The courtyard was full of wagging tails, curious eyes, and very proud young caretakers.
The Feast of St. Francis falls each year on October 4. His example invites us to see every creature as a gift and to treat the natural world with care. This spirit connects with our October virtue of Reverence, since honoring God’s creation teaches students to show respect, gratitude, and wonder in daily life.
